I am Sara Ortín from Barcelona and I am full-time nomad with Gingy Mou. I am a biologist and primatologist and was looking for a PhD in Primatology but I wasn’t ready, I felt I had things to see, places to explore, so I decided to dream for a while: I rented my little unit in Barcelona and left to travel and tell stories about the dogs in my new path.
I left in Barcelona my two special dogs-kids, Ula and Joy. Ula a Podenco, Joy a greyhound, both rescued from the hunting. I decided not to take them with me as I didn’t know what I was going to do or be. I miss them every second, but I know they are fantastic with my family and their dad.
They told me I had to go to school, and then get a proper job, a car, then a bigger car,… like there was no other possible life…
I had absolutely nothing planned; I made my backpack and I took my cameras. The only thing I knew is that Zambia was going to be my first stop on the 22nd of January 2017. That’s all I had. I was sure that universe would guide me well.
I met Ginger in 2015 in Zambia while I was doing my master thesis in a chimpanzee sanctuary. We connected since first second. She was a special dog. Sensitive, shy, sweet,… When I came back to Zambia in January 2017 I found out Ginger and her sister were security dogs in town for a drilling company. Her sister died by some thieves who got in to steal some petrol, Ginger hid, but her sister Flora tried to protect the place. I rescued and adopted Ginger the 24th of April. She would never have to hide again to safe her life. Read here Ging’s story
Since then we both dream together.
Our adventures together are being incredible. We have been in Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Spain.
The worst: having severe malaria in Malawi
The best: being wild for a week in Mt Mulanje, in Malawi, over 3000m.
I spend the rest of my time on The Dziko Project, an animal welfare project we are founding while traveling after seeing the sad conditions of the dogs in Africa, also, exploring, learning, breathing, hiking, crossing countries… and, sometimes, freaking out and crying. Ah! and working! Yes, as a photographer, social media person and welfare specialist; and no, I don’t make any money from my blog.
Always with Ginger and the Landcruiser.
Always worth it but never easy.
